The oldest golf course on the island of Mallorca – Golf Son Vida – is part of Arabella Golf and deserves its legendary status. A host venue to the Balearic Open on the European Tour in the 1990s – the great Seve Ballesteros won the event in 1990 – the course layout has stood the test of time and continues to attract golfers from all over the world. There is a feeling of tradition and history as the fairways wind through the prestigious Son Vida estate but the technical design, speed of the greens and need for accuracy creates a memorable experience at this 5,601m (6,125 yards) par-72 course. The stunning par-five 18th hole is a fine finishing hole with a tempting risk-and-reward feature to carry the water for the more adventurous. It’s a golf course that will leave you with many fond memories.

One of three 18-hole golf courses making up Arabella Golf, Golf Son Muntaner opened in 2000 but has plenty of historic connections. The 6,266m (6,852 yards) course is situated in a beautiful spot between the mountain range of Na Burguesa and the Bay of Palma. But although the course is a relatively new addition, a 1000-year-old olive tree on the 15th hole – Na Capitana – which is landmarked by the government of Palma de Mallorca, shows how the landscape has been used sensitively. It’s a memorable golf course with remarkable greens and a real eye for detail.

One of the three courses which make up part of Arabella Golf, Golf Son Quint is the youngest golf course of the island, established in 2007. Perched high on the hillside, the par-72 course provides splendid views – notably from the eighth tee where the Bay of Palma and the wonderful cathedral can be seen. With a wide range of native vegetation, there is an authentic, Mediterranean atmosphere to the modern and elegant course. At 6,199m (6,779 yards) it is a lengthy test for golfers of all abilities. And Golf Son Quint also offers some great facilities for golfing novices or for experienced players to sharpen skills with an excellent nine-hole short course at the venue.

Son Quint Pitch & Putt has been landscaped using the indigenous vegetation from Mallorca, featuring olive, carob and pine trees as well as Leyland cypresses as a lateral protection to one side of the course. Throughout the 638 meters length of the course, stone walls typical from Mallorca, oleander bushes and lantana flowers complete a challenging but fun short golf course.

Opened in 1986 as a nine-hole course and extended in 1995, there is plenty of regal charm about Real Golf de Bendinat. At 5660 metres (6190 yards), the par-70 course requires strategy, skill and placement rather than brute force and power to reap your rewards. Many of the 18 holes are dog legs and it is by no means easy with trees and water in abundance on a course situated just a 20-minute drive from Palma. Designed by Martin Hawtree, the course makes the most of its beautiful location in a wooded valley at the foot of a mountain with some breathtaking views of the surrounding area, particularly on the back nine. The backdrop of the imposing Bendinat Castle adds to the experience and the honorary president of the club is none other than King Juan Carlos of Spain. The royal connections don’t end there either with HRH Prince Andrew the Duke of York, HRH Princess Brigitte of Sweden and Hollywood royalty – Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas – among those to have played this fine course down the years.

Located just 12km from Palma, T Golf & Country Club Poniente is one of the established golf courses on the island after its opening in 1978. At 6426m (7030 yards), the par-72 course is characterised by its wide fairways and large greens, but offers a great challenge to any level golfer. Running through beautiful rolling hills, majestic pines, seven lakes and numerous bunkers, it all combines to create a memorable round, while the reconfigured layout of the holes by new owners in October 2015 further improves the experience. Designed by John Harris, it helped inspire fellow golf architect Pepe Gancedo who called the 14th hole – formerly the 10th – “one of the best par fours I’ve ever played in my life.” Aside from the glorious holes, golfers will enjoy wonderful views of the mountains of Sierra de Tramontana throughout the round.

The first of the two Santa Ponsa golf courses opened in 1977 and is the third oldest club on the island. The par-72 course measures up at 6,543 metres (7,155 yards) from the back tees and boasts one of the longest par-fives in Europe – the 590m (645 yard) 10th. Designed by Folco Nardi and Pepe Gancedo, Golf Santa Ponsa I is a long and challenging course with lakes and a great variety of trees. Wide fairways allow the longer hitters to commit to their tee shots but any golfer’s short game will face a stern examination as well. Golf Santa Ponsa has also hosted European PGA Tour events on several occasions with legendary Spaniards Seve Ballesteros and Miguel Angel Jimenez among the list of champions to have triumphed at the venue.

Opened in 1991, Golf Santa Ponsa II is a fantastic par 72 golf course measuring 6,053 metres (6,620 yards). Situated in pine woods and between large lakes it offers plenty of variety and tests a golfer’s strategy throughout the round. There are some memorable holes but the par three 18th hole provides the setting for a fabulous finish. From the back tees, it is 166m (182 yards) over water to hit the island green in the shape of Mallorca. Although Golf Santa Ponsa II is for exclusive use of the shareholders, some important competitions have also been held here.

As with Golf Santa Ponsa II it is for exclusive use of shareholders and both share the Club House, driving range, 350 m. in length with tees at both ends of more than 100 meters, putting green and chipping area. It is an ideal course for beginners and for players who wish to improve their short game. It is also a course which adapts to Pitch and Putt.

The Golf Son Antem West Course was added to the venue in 2001 – seven years after the original East Course opened. Olive and almond trees are regular features of a beautiful golf course set in the heart of the Mallorcan countryside with spectacular views of the Randa Mountain. But the golf course itself is equally pleasing on the eye. There are some superb holes but the fifth is particularly memorable – a par four dogleg left which demands an accurate second shot to a raised green protected by pot bunkers.

Founded in 1994 on former hunting grounds – and still home to plenty of resident wildlife – the east course at Son Antem Golf requires both distance and accuracy to prosper. At 6,274 metres (6,861 yards) there are some long, challenging holes. But the wide fairways on many of the holes strike a good balance for golfers to score well. Five lakes are dotted around the course and there is some subtle use of the water to test strategy and course management to find the greens, while the 15th hole requires challenge to make a satisfying carry to the green. But Son Antem East has plenty of variety and a natural feel to it to help it stand out from other golf courses as a memorable round.

Vall D’Or Golf offers an interesting combination with two different landscapes coming into play on the same course. The par-71 course measures in at 5,539m (6.057 yards) and the front nine boasts rolling fairways surrounded by pine, almond and olive groves. The back nine features wider fairways leading down to the coast with some magnificent sea views to be enjoyed along the way. Built in 1986 as a nine-hole course, which is now the back nine, it was extended in 1993 to complete a tricky and entertaining golf course at a beautiful venue.

The second oldest club on the island was established in 1967 and is a picturesque parkland golf course with stunning views of the mountains and the bay of Cala Millor. The 6,050m (6,616 yards) par-72 course has generous fairways and the rough is kept at a length which means the punishment isn’t too severe if you stray off line. But off the fairways, the trees are likely to cause more problems, especially on holes three to seven especially requiring accurate play. The greens are full of subtle undulations and there is water in play on six of the holes. Beautiful, challenging, fair and enjoyable, Club de Golf Son Servera offers something for everyone.

In the north east of Mallorca, this par-73 course is one of the most charming golf courses on the island. Created by architect José Gancedo in 1988, the course – measuring 6185 metres (6800 yards) – has an added attraction with the resident wildlife. When you play at Canyamel, it is very likely that you will cross paths with live turtles, rabbits, rare birds and plenty of other animals during the round as the course was declared a nature reserve in 1991. Away from the wildlife, there are some memorable features as golfers play past a rustic stone house in the middle of the ninth fairway and another 300-year-old house on the 12th hole. There are also some stunning sea views at times with the neighbouring island of Menorca visible from the fifth hole, while the three tier piano-shaped 18th green is a spectacular finish to the round. It’s a course that carries real peace and tranquillity but the fast, true and undulating greens ensure it’s an exciting and memorable place to play.

The par-72 course measures up at 5890 metres (6440 yards) and was designed by US golf architect Dan Maples. There are some narrow fairways to negotiate and some stunning holes along the way, perhaps most notably the 15th – voted as Best Hole on the Island by Mallorca Magazine – which offers glorious views of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding valley. With six lakes dotted around the course, there are constant hazards in play to keep any golfer’s mind on the task but it’s a beautiful location and a good test for players of all standards.

It is of average difficulty, and is ideal for players of all handicaps. The course is quite undulating and relatively short with a lot of trees and other hazards. Designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr, Club de Golf Alcanada’s 18-hole course opened in 2003. Situated in the northern part of the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, Alcanada is located right by the sea and the 6499-meters lay-out blends naturally into the typical Mallorcan landscape. The club takes its name from a nearby island just off the shore which, complete with its own lighthouse, can be seen from most of the holes. Apart from the splendid sea view, players are surrounded by pine and olive groves throughout their round and, even though a young course, Alcanada is already recognised by a number of well known golf magazines and golf guides as one of the finest courses in Spain and Europe — including being named the best course in Europe by leading German magazine Golf Journal for the fourth year in a row in 2012.

The par-71, 6,027m (6,590 yards) golf course is built on a plot of 165 acres and is tricky, without being daunting – although the challenge is made even tougher from the back tees. There is an interesting mix of skills required to play the course well with precision and power all required at different times. And the intelligent design ensures that good shots are rewarded while poor shots are punished throughout an enjoyable round.

Just 15 minutes from Palma Airport one of the island’s younger golf courses opened in 2006. Designed by RS Group, the par-72 Championship-standard course is lengthy at 6347 metres (6940 yards) and is an opportunity for big-hitters to unleash the driver regularly with probably the widest fairways on Mallorca allowing some margin for error from the tee. But those who base their game on accuracy will still see the benefits as the greens are so well-defended. There is a characteristic landscape of Mediterranean vegetation with stunning pine forests interspersed with large areas of marshland. Four lakes and two island greens – the par-five fourth and the par-three 13th – add to the enjoyable experience.

Ryder Cup-winning captain Ian Woosnam – who won a green jacket in 1991 – made the grand comparison to the famous greens at the iconic venue after being suitably impressed on his visit to Mallorca. The par-72 course measures 6,621m (7,240 yards) so requires length off the tee but there are generous lush fairways and wide landing areas to provide a fair test. But designer Thomas Himmel has struck the perfect balance with fairway bunkers, plenty of water and well-defended greens to create a memorable test considered to be up there with the very best golf courses Mallorca has to offer.
